Fantastic being able to compete with my wife again…”
“Beady” and “Milly” are back. Eight years after taking on the Dakar in a race car, Mike Jones and his wife Susan will be at the start of the 2014 Dakar. Married for close to 30 years, they both have a common passion for the Dakar. A passion that has become a business. Mike is indeed the founder and owner of Rally Raid UK with Paul Round, a team that will have 4 cars, 3 bikes and a truck on the next rally. Too busy taking care of his customers these past few years, he had never had the opportunity to compete again since retiring from the 2006 edition after eleven stages. Susan on the other hand became the first British woman to start and finish the truck race in 2010 as the navigator of Pavel Fasko's MAN. They both know that this Dakar won't really be a race but rather a good opportunity to keep an eye out on their clients during the rally, and that's why they absolutely have to reach the finish line in Valparaiso.
M.J.: “I used to race enduro bikes internationally when I was younger. In 1982, I was meant to do the Dakar but I missed the opportunity. That's when I really discovered the rally. It took me almost twenty years to get back. Since that time I have moved to cars after several injuries. I first competed on the Dakar in 1999 with Paul Round. Since then, I've taken 350 team customers to the event. It's fantastic to be competing with my wife again. We'll be looking after our customers during the race. If I need to stop, I will. I'll be their mechanic in the race. I'll then have to deal with different problems at the bivouac. That's also why, for business matters as well, we absolutely have to get to the finish.”
