Don Hatton is from Duncan, on Vancouver Island British Columbia, Canada, he and his wife Natalie have four grown children, his family has been at the starting line of every Dakar he has attended.
In 2007 his life took a different and life changing turn, ”Ever since I watched my first Dakar on Wide World of Sports in 1979, I always dreamed of entering the Dakar”. It took me a lot of time but I finally did it.
Don decided to fulfill a 30 year dream and enter the Dakar rally, he faced daunting task particularly difficult when you are an overweight middle aged insurance broker competing against athletes half your age. When you consider Duncan is as far away from the deserts and dunes of Africa as you can get, Don had never ridden in sand in his life until he started his Dakar training, in fact Don had not even seen a desert until he started his Dakar training.
He began an extensive and difficult training program to prepare himself for the difficult task ahead, only to have his dream shattered after arriving in Lisbon Portugal for the start of the Dakar Rally. The 2008 Dakar Rally was cancelled due to Terrorist threats to participants.
Returning to Duncan he re-grouped and set his goal to compete in the 2009 Dakar Rally. Don entered Rally’s in Morocco and Dubai to help provide him the experience he needed in desert riding, he finished a very respectable 5th in his class in Morocco and 25th in Dubai. In January of 2009 Don finally realized his 30 year dream entering and starting the Dakar rally, only to have his dream again ripped from him after a very serious crash on stage four of the rally ended his race.
After a long 7 month recovery Don is back training for the Dakar, he again participated in the Moroccan Rally for 2009 and finished 4th in class. I have learned a lot in the last 3 years, my navigation skills have really improved and I will definitely not repeat the mistake of 2009, I am looking forward to participating in and finishing the 2010 Dakar Rally.”
