Jean-Marie Davoy: "17 years that no-one from Le Mans had started the Dakar!"
"It’s been 17 years that no-one from Le Mans has started the Dakar in a car!" An outrage for one of the key cities of French motorsports. Marc Jourdan and his driver Jean-Marie Davoy, two competitors from the Sarthe area of France, intend on representing with dignity the town of the notorious 24 hour circuit on the tracks of the most famous rally.
Neither of them has come back since 1991. "You need time and money for this race, explains Jean-Marie Davoy. It was difficult for me to both lead a professional life and the preparation for a Dakar". However, "I never gave up off-road rallies", he adds. Never since Jean-Claude Chemarin, the famous bike endurance World champion one day talked to him about the Dakar. "One day I was driving on the circuit of Le Mans. Jean-Claude came and asked me if I was tempted". As a result to that conversation, this director of a real-estate agency has three Dakar rallies behind him after being part of a fast assistance crew.
Marc Jourdan also had an encounter with Jean-Claude Chemarin during his life. "It was over twenty years ago. We started a car garage together. We would prepare rally cars and that’s how I got to go to the Pharaohs rally for the first time in 1986". During his three appearances (1988, 1990 and 1991), the tradesman experienced very difficult Dakar rallies. "We would go through the Ténéré, Lybia… It would really be tough. At the time, there was nothing in terms of infrastructures..." he remembers.
