Safety and prevention, along with the quality of assistance received by anyone who may be injured, are key factors in the organisation of the Rally. This is why we feel that it is important again to describe the health and safety services put in place and the insurance taken out for you by the Organisers as well as the optional additional insurance offered but recommended. The particular purpose of this note is to make you aware of the insurance plan provided for all competitors so that you can check that it fully complements your personal insurance and, if it does not, arrange additional cover.

1) Assistance/Repatriation services: included in your registration

The following insurance policy has been set up and taken out by the Organiser for competitors (Included in registration fee).

The organisers have passed assistance / repatriation services to MUTUAIDE, a subsidiary of Groupama, in the case of physical attack which makes it impossible, in the opinion of a member of the rally medical team, to continue with the competition.

The Organisers are responsible for medical and hospitalisation expenses incurred, by agreement with the Rally’s Medical Director, of up to €4,500 per person.
Medical expenses incurred over €4,500 will be your own responsibility (or to your personal insurance).

/ ! \ TO READ IMPERATIVELY: Extract from the financial limits of the cover of the medical and hospitalisation expenses / ! \

We strongly advise you:
- To carefully read the terms of the contract set out below in order to be aware of the scope and financial limits of the cover.

Donwload the agreement

- To check the scope of your personal insurance and, in case of gaps, to take out additional “Medical Costs” insurance to cover medical and hospital costs; this can be coupled with Personal Accident insurance.

- To download the medical informations by clicking on the link below, complete the document with your computer and send it directly to Mutuaide by email ( or fax (+33 1 45 16 63 93)

Download the medical form

2) Civil Liability Insurance: included in your registration

The Rally’s Civil Liability Insurance provides cover for accidental loss and damage that your vehicle may cause to third parties.

The Rally’s Civil Liability Insurance provides cover for vehicles on the Rally’s official route.

Vehicles not loaded onto the Organisation’s ferries and those driven outside the Rally (including before and after the Event) must mandatorily have a local insurance policy taken out by their owner. Private trials undertaken additionally to or in parallel with the Rally, as well as dangerous driving other than during the selection stages, are excluded from cover.

Download the scope and financial limits of the Civil Liability Insurance subscribed by the organizers

3) Personal Accident Insurance: Optional

Participation in a Rally-raid is generally excluded from all personal insurance policies.

We therefore ask you to carefully check what active cover you have with your sports federations and insurers when taking part in sports competitions.

We would like to stress the importance of holding Personal Accident insurance with Medical Costs cover which, in the event of a serious accident occurring during the Rally, will allow you to have the benefit of fixed rate compensation and will cover the reimbursement of your medical expenses incurred in Bolivia and Argentina with the approval of the Rally’s Medical Director.

  1. - The Rally Organisers will be responsible for medical expenses incurred, with the approval of the Medical Director and before any repatriation, up to a limit of 4,500 euros. We strongly recommend that you have additional personal insurance to cover possible medical expenses exceeding €4,500 in order for such expenses, should they arise, not to be your responsibility. If you have no personal insurance, you will be required to sign a document accepting that you will be liable for payment of any medical expenses exceeding €4,500.
  2. - No secondary repatriation services will be provided for injuries that can be treated in situ or that do not prevent you from travelling on your own. We stress that an obligation to wihdraw from the Rally does not mean that the Organisers will be responsible for any repatriation costs.

4) Maritime Transport Insurance: Optional

Compensation for loss and damage to vehicles during maritime transport is particularly low by comparison to the value of the vehicles. We therefore strongly encourage you to arrange additional insurance in order to provide increased compensation.

Taking out one of these two insurance policies is optional but recommended in order to improve your insurance cover and adapt it to the risks of Rally-raids.

These policies, if you opt for them, can be taken out with the insurer or broker of your choice or by looking at those arranged by Gras Savoye to help you simplify the steps to be taken. You can take out the latter insurance immediately online via the insurance broker’s website or by post by contacting Gras Savoye direct - their contact details are shown on the website. Gras Savoye will also be present during the administrative checks in Buenos Aires.

Any accident must be declared to the Rally Organisers within 24 hours, otherwise no claim will be entertained under the Civil Liability Motor Insurance or the Medical Insurance.

We hope that you find this note useful and that it will enable you, if necessary, to supplement and adapt your insurance cover; further details are provided in the Official Rules of the 2017 Rally and on the Rally website.

Aware of the risks which you could incur during the Dakar Rally 2017 and the cover put in place by the Organiser, we advise you to check the adequacy of your personal insurance, and should this be insufficient, to make the necessary arrangements to ensure that you do not to find yourself without cover.

The 2017 edition of the Dakar will be one of the toughest since its arrival in South America. You will pass from the dampness of Paraguay, to the Bolivian Altiplano and finish in the warm Argentinian desert. You will find information here below to help you prepare for the various medical risks you may face during the Rally: Mountain Sickness, Hyperthermia and Hypothermia.

Sentinel is a safety instrument and must therefore be connected directly to the battery. Sentinel is a safety system fitted to all racing vehicles. It enables to warn the competitors on the following cases:

  • The vehicle behind wants to overtake: when the driver of a car or truck presses on the push-button control, a signal is transmitted to the competing bike/quad/car/truck that he wants to overtake (range: 150 meters). The driver about to be overtaken receives an audible warning.
  • Accident warning alarm: if a vehicle represents a danger to competitors arriving on the sport (concealed behind a dune, rollover after turn), the pilot must press the two alarm buttons on his Sentinel. Then coming competitors are thus informed by an Audible Buzzer plus a Flashing Light.
