South Racing's guardian angels

For the second consecutive year, Stefan Henken will be driving a fast assistance truck for the highly ambitious South Racing team, who have entered a host of top crews in the lightweight prototypes (T3) and SSVs (T4). The 41-year-old German got his first taste of fast assistance at the El Chott Rally 2014, when he jumped on board with fellow compatriot Mathias Behringer. A few years later, Mathias brought him onto his Dakar crew as a navigator, and they ended up taking part in five editions together. Stefan then got behind the wheel himself last year with Michael and Ludwig Helminger, and it was certainly a baptism of fire; they got stuck in a basin with several other trucks on Stage 9, in one of the most memorable episodes of the rally. The crew still made it through to the finish, and South Racing have given Stefan the nod again for Dakar 2023. Michael returns as navigator, while the experienced Philipp Rettig comes in as the mechanic. As well as rescuing SSVs, Stefan occasionally drives them as well; he won the Hellas Rally in 2017 and came third at this year's Balkan Offroad Rallye. He is also helping Hannes Kinigadner with the organisation of next year's Oasis Rally in Tunisia. First though, he will be looking to help South Racing defend both of their Dakar titles in the T3s and T4s.
