He may be only 28, but Martin Macik already has a wealth of Dakar experience under his belt, having taken part in the rally five times since 2013. After starting out as a navigator for Vlastimil Vildman, Martin got behind the wheel himself in 2015, although his rally was ended by a broken differential on Stage 5. The following year he made it to the finish line, before securing his best result to date in 2017, a superb 10th place. The Dakar has held a fascination for Martin since his father took him to watch the end of the rally in Senegal as a 13-year-old. Martin Macik Senior began participating in the Dakar in 2003, and so it was only a matter of time before Martin Junior followed in his footsteps. In 2018, he returns with the same youthful team of Frantisek Tomasek (35) and Michael Mrkva (36), and the Big Shock trio will be keen to build on last year's excellent result, as well as wins this year in Spain, Poland and Tunisia.
"This will be my sixth Dakar, and the fourth time as a driver, so I will be aiming as high as I can! I know the Dakar, it's about fighting to be the best - even if I'm not the kind of guy to say 'I'll be in the top three' or anything like that. Of course my aim is to be in the top 10 or higher, but we'll have to see. We don't know exactly which other teams will be coming. Between the Russians, the Dutch, the French and all the others there could well be 20 trucks fighting for a place in the top 10. We are a private team, but we want to show that if you are good enough, and have the right support, it's possible to fight with the big manufacturers."

Martin Macik réalise le meilleur temps après 48 km de spéciale. Le Tchèque, toujours à la recherche de sa première victoire sur le Dakar, devance Ton Van Genugten de 41 secondes et Dmitry Sotnikov de 1’13’’.
Martin Macik a établi la meilleure marque après 100 km pour 4 secondes seulement face au Kamaz de Dmitry Sotnikov et 10 secondes sur Ton Van Genugten. Eduard Nikolaev est aussi dans la bataille à 29 secondes.
Martin Macik enlève la première partie de la spéciale et domine un classement camion très serré. Dmitry Sotnikov est à 28 secondes, Federico Villagra à 30 secondes et Ton Van Genugten à 33 secondes. Le leader du général Eduard Nikolaev cède 3 minutes, sans conséquence...
