Interview

"The Dakar is a marathon."

Over the course of his long Dakar career, Pedro Bianchi Prata has always helped out other riders. The Portuguese biker first took part himself in 2007, providing a bike and assistance for compatriot Helder Rodrigues as he won two stages and took an impressive fifth place overall. Pedro also worked with the late Paulo Gonçalves before joining the Honda factory team as a coordinator in 2018 and 2019. He then took part in the SSVs at Dakar 2020, demonstrating his superb navigation skills by guiding Conrad Rautenbach to fourth place overall. After skipping Dakar 2021 because of the pandemic, Pedro is back in 2022 as a rider and team manager. He will be looking to help rookies Paulo Oliveira and Arcelio Couto complete their maiden Dakar, with all three men riding the new Honda CRF450RX. It will be a special experience for Paulo in particular, as he becomes the very first rider from Mozambique to take part in the Dakar. Given Pedro's track record, you would expect both newcomers to successfully make it to Jeddah; after all, the 47-year-old has never failed to reach the finish line in 10 participations to date.

"Since I started doing the Dakar, I've always been the helper on my team. We started with Helder Rodrigues in 2007. He was riding with my bike and came 5th overall, and I helped him. I gave him two wheels during that rally, that was my job. A few years later Paulo Gonçalves was in my team, for three years, and we trained together, I helped him with navigation. We won the first stages with our bikes with him, it was a nice experience. In 2017 I rode an official HRC bike when another rider broke his wrist before the rally. I helped all the official guys, doing the bikes in the marathon stage and everything. And then I worked for HRC as a team coordinator. My contract finished in 2019 and I was in SSV with Conrad in 2020. We came fourth overall, which was nice. Last year, with Covid and everything, we didn't have a project, it was too risky. So here I am, back for my 10th Dakar on a bike. It's like a new challenge. I've brought two rookies with me: Arcelio Couto and Paulo Oliveira from Mozambique. I've been training them since they started out in rally raid. They learned navigation with me and we've done a lot of training together, and a couple of rallies too. I'm here to help them to finish. We'll try to do a good Dakar with no stress and bring the medal home, that's the main goal. In my opinion, the Dakar is a marathon. It's not about pushing every day. If you want a good result you have to be good every day, not very good one day and very bad on other days. I will keep the balance, do a good navigation with the experience I've gained over so many years here, and I think it will be fine."
