Interview

“As soon as I heard about the Dakar Classic I knew it was for us”

Carsten Hesz and his codriver Bernard Caspers are no strangers to regularity rallies. Carsten has entered the famous Italian classic the Mille Miglia for the last 5 years and regularly competes in smaller rallies both aboard in the UK and Italy and at home in Holland. For these type of events they don’t take the easy option, favouring pre-war machines, preferably Italian, with a penchant for Lancias and Fiats. Of course as a keen motorsports enthusiasts they have always followed the Dakar with great interest, an enthusiasm that friendship with a certain Bernhard ten Brinke has done nothing to diminish, but they had never before considered competing. Until that is the creation of the Dakar Classic, an event that could have almost been designed with them in mind. Obviously with cars from the 1930s not exactly being ideal for the event, or for that matter eligible, they set about finding something more suitable and with a group of friends went on a bit of a shopping spree, in of all places Japan…

“As soon as I heard about the Dakar Classic I knew it was for us and so we decided to form a team of 5 cars with a group of friends. To make things as simple as possible we decided to buy the same vehicle and through a contact in Japan bought 6 Mitsubishi Pajero Evos -5 to race and 1 for spares. For various reasons 2 of the crews dropped out so we are now a team of 3 cars and have another friend with a Unimog truck doing our assistance. They have already competed on the Dakar in South America as rapid assistance in the truck class so they know their way around the event. Although the cars, ‘homologation specials’ built in very limited numbers to make them eligible for competition, we’re in good condition we didn’t want to take any chances. They have been completely rebuilt and the necessary modification such as roll cages added to comply with the Dakar Classic regulations. All in all we’ve put a lot of effort into our entry. We are of course going for the experience and to enjoy ourselves but at the same time we’ll try and achieve a good result.”
