Gerrit Zuurmond isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and stand in the mud up until his knees. His company De Jong Zuurmond is responsible for maintaining the greens on the side of highways and national roads in the Netherlands, but also the borders of rivers and canals. Zuurmond was driving tractors and other machinery for all of his life before he first entered the Dakar as mechanic and navigator with his own team. Since last year Zuurmond is at the wheel of the Rainbow truck, that has the colours of his company. Being a huge fan of MAN trucks he bought one himself last year, and for the 2019 edition of the Dakar he even upgraded to the 2013 model that Hans Stacey drove until two years ago. Former “Original by Motul” bike rider Jasper Riezebos returns as navigator with Zuurmond.
G.Z.: “In 2018 I switched from the navigator’s seat to the driver’s seat and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately we had to abandon due to mechanical problems, so we have something to make up. We had the chance to buy another MAN, a more recent model built by the Veka team, and driven by 2007 Dakar champion Hans Stacey. Not only it is equipped with a factory engine, but the fact that it was developed and driven by Stacey himself -he is a true hero to me- was an important reason.”
