While his brother Marcos was already on the start line of the rally back in 2013, Cristian Baumgart will be living his first Dakar this year in Peru. Used to bigger vehicles in the Brazilian cross-country championship, Cristian will switch his Ford Ranger for a smaller CanAm Maverick in the SxS class alongside his usual co-driver Alberto Andreotti. This year, the elder of the Baumgart brothers clinched an unprecedented third consecutive title at the Rally Dos Sertoes. That was just a few weeks before discovering the huge sand dunes of Peru during the Desafio Inca that he finished in third spot of the SxS class. Despite his lack of experience on the world’s biggest rally, Cristian Baumgart will be one to watch.
C.B.: “(about the Desafio Inca and Peru) It's all very different in terms of piloting and navigating. A very hard, difficult but pleasurable race with very demanding navigation in the dunes. Very different from the Brazilian cross country, and certainly different from the Dakar. The level was very high and besides having to learn to ride the dunes, we had to get used to the SxS as well, since we had been competing with the Ford Ranger. It was a test of learning in every way, and the performance was very good.” A.A.: “It was a whole new world for us. The whole rally was only in dunes, and we had to learn everything from scratch, including the SxS, since we had been competing in cars. I must say that it was an extremely positive and very valid experience, as we will reach the Dakar in January with some preparation and some experience in the kind of terrain we will face.”
