In the Varela family, the Dakar runs in the blood. Bruno Varela shows up on the rally for the first time as a competitor but he knows all about the race. Son of Reinaldo, the 22-year-old learned from the best when it comes to SxS vehicles. While his father was triumphing on the 40th edition, Bruno was already present on the bivouac as part of the triumphant team. His time has come and he can be considered as a rather promising rookie, one who could surprise the field. His recent victory on the Merzouga Rally puts him on the list of contenders. His lack of experience on the Dakar course will be compensated by the presence of his co-driver Maykel Justo who has seen it all when he was a navigator for Brazilian truck legend André De Azevedo. Their only goal is to make sure a Varela is on the highest step of the podium in Lima.
“I came to the Dakar through my father. The idea this year was to give the Varela family a second opportunity to win. I already came on the Dakar five times as a follower and I loved it. I guess we have the Dakar in our blood. I was really happy to be able to compete with the best on the Merzouga Rally. The objective is to go for victory but also focus on finishing. The best Varela has to win no matter who it is.”
