Putting Qian'an on the sporting map

Yuqiao Zhao has had a fascinating journey from the sleepy countryside of China's Hebei region to the high-octane roads of Dakar 2020. Having grown up in poverty, the 53-year-old became a successful entrepreneur after setting up the Qian'an Jiujiang Wire Company with his brother Yujiang. Passionate about sport, Yuqiao has helped to reinvent the steel-producing city of Qian'an as a centre of sporting excellence, investing considerable funds to build the Jiujiang Sports Centre, which hosted Olympic boxing trials for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Qian'an Jiujiang Group also established the Racing Sport Club in 2006, with the bold target of becoming China's leading offroad rally team. Yuqiao and his ambitious outfit have been competing in domestic events such as the Taklimakan Rally for over a decade, and they are now preparing for a step-up on the international scene with a first tilt at the Dakar. The team are coming to Saudi Arabia with three cars: one driven by Yuqiao and Ke Yan, who came 12th at this year's Silk Way Rally, the second by star driver Aidong Li and Zhaoyang Shen, and the third by up-and-coming talent Quan Ruan and Yirong Wang. Yuqiao, often seen racing an iconic car with two Chinese flags on the front, will be hoping to get his Chevrolet through to the finish line in Qiddiya on 17 January, which would be a perfect birthday present on the day he turns 54.
