Austin Jones: "I didn't want to open up tomorrow"

Dakar 2022 | Stage 4 | AL SALAMIYA > AL-HOFUF
January 5 th 2022 - 17:16 [GMT + 3]

It was a long day. The first 150 k or something like that, I was kinda having a hard time. It was all really, really fast. I'm cool with going fast, but everything was so sketchy. A lot of big jumps... I don't know, it was hard to get into a rhythm in the beginning. In the second part, lots of dunes. Those were nice, a little bit taller. The third part, going through these rivers at the end, was insane. Obviously, we're all covered in mud and our windshields are all kind of smudged, so it's pretty hard to see. Lots of big rocks all day, but I think we finished P2, so we're good. I don't really want to start winning stages yet because I don't want to open up. I don't want to lead first. I like to have someone to chase, so this is perfect for me, it doesn't bother me at all. It's kinda all part of our plan here.

Still in control of the T4 overall after finishing the special in second place, 10 seconds behind Rodrigo Luppi de Oliveira, the American is pleased not to have to open the stage tomorrow.
