Henk Lategan: “I need to finish and I need to gain experience”

Second on the day’s special behind Sainz and in front of Peterhansel, Lategan is flattered but hopes more than anything to finish the Dakar to gain experience.

“I’m really happy with the day. When we stopped at the control point, I was actually shocked to see that we were out in front. It’s a really good feeling. On day one we had such a big disappointment, so to have a day like today really makes up a bit for it. As for a stage win, I was asked the same question yesterday and I think for me I don’t want to risk losing the experience because you know last year my race ended on day five and this year, I want to go all the way. I need to finish and I need to gain experience. Like I said, today we can be on the pace when there are not too many dunes and too much off-piste, but the more experienced guys just have the pace when we go off the road. I need to see a lot of that and I need to do a lot of open desert racing. I would love to do some more races, but unfortunately the budget doesn’t allow it. I really need to just get to the last day. It’s mad, but we know from last year that we we’re sort of okay in this company. Our pace was alright. I just need to find somewhere where I’m not making mistakes and not having bad moments. Today was relatively good on that side. Maybe there were one or two places in the dunes where I wasn’t expecting something. That’s what really gets me. I have to back off a little, I think. I think towards the end we were probably going a bit too slow for the dunes”.
