Interview

South Racing's Good Samaritan

Mathias Behringer is preparing for a milestone outing at Dakar 2021. The highly experienced German will be making his 10th appearance as he once again gets behind the wheel of the South Racing assistance truck. The 46-year-old has been a regular on the world's toughest rally since 2007, when he worked as a mechanic on Geert Verhoeven's fast assistance truck. He began driving in 2009, and has spent over a decade providing vital support and retrieving stranded competitors. In more recent years, he has helped South Racing achieve some excellent results. The Germany-based team have become experts in the SSVs class, which means that Mathias will be keeping a close eye on the likes of 2019 champion Chaleco Lopez, Kees Koolen and Khalifa Al-Attiyah, the younger brother of three-time cars winner Nasser. A keen Borussia Dortmund fan, Mathias has never raced competitively on the Dakar, although he still managed to come as high as 10th in 2011. He is joined for the 5th consecutive year by navigator Stefan Henken, while Robert Striebe replaces Bruno Sousa as the crew's mechanic.
