2019: Silk Way Rally (Ab.)
Baja 1000 Pikes Peak

An american touch to the Hino-Sugawara team

There’s been a bit of a revolution in the Hino Factory team. Farewell master Yoshimaza Sugawara who decided to call it quits after over thirty years racing the Dakar. While his son Teruhito is the new man in charge, a new driver will be on the start line of the Dakar. Ikuo Hanawa is the president of Summit Racing that specialises in off-road racing in Japan and is a bit of a legend back home. The soon to be 60-year-old driver-businessman started racing when he was in high school. He went on to compete in the Baja 1000, finishing 5th in 1991. In 2016, he even finished fourth of another mythical race: Pikes Peak in the electric car class. So from overboosted trophy trucks he will now be onboard a far bigger machine on the start line of the world’s toughest rally. And that’s where the Hino revolution continues. Indeed, the brand launched a new North America model truck with a long nose that Hanawa started competing in during the Silk Way Rally. While the factory team decided to retire early from the race, they will show up with big ambitions on the Dakar. For his debut Hanawa will have at his side his second son Yudai while the third member of the Hino 600 Series truck will be a young lady: Mayumi Kezuka.
