“We will try to aim for the top 10”

This will be Dakar number 4 for Czech truck driver Martin Soltys, who has enjoyed somewhat mixed fortunes on the world's toughest rally. He made a solid debut in 2018, coming 12th behind team leader Martin Kolomy, and was running as high as 7th in 2019 until technical problems forced him to abandon in the high Peruvian dunes. The 47-year-old looked on course for a top-10 finish in last year's first Saudi Arabian edition, but a servo pump issue on the penultimate day meant he had to be content with 11th overall. This year, Martin returns with trusted crew members David Schovanek and Tomas Sikola determined to finally crack the top 10. The Czech trio will be racing in an improved Tatra Phoenix, which now boasts an automatic gearbox. Martin is confident it will make life easier and help him focus on achieving the best possible result. He will also be keeping an eye on new teammate Ignacio Casale, the three-time quads champion, who'll be getting behind the wheel of another Tatra Phoenix alongside Alvaro Leon -himself a winner in the SSVs- and Petr Capka. The Buggyra Racing team have been participating in the trucks since 2014, claiming a handful of stage victories and occasionally leading the standings. They will be determined to give the likes of Kamaz and Maz a run for their money, not to mention Czech rivals Martin Macik and Ales Loprais. Martin has already shown he has what it takes to lead the team, so don't be surprised if Dakar 2021 ends up being his most successful outing to date.

M.S.: “For the most part, I was satisfied with Dakar 2020. The first edition in Saudi Arabia was tough due to the weather conditions, but we were able to make the most of it despite some limitations. Now I know more or less what to expect at Dakar 2021, although I'm sure the race will look completely different and bring new challenges. The main objective is to successfully complete the rally. I would like to focus on my driving style and get the most out of the automatic gearbox, which is one of the newest additions to our Tatra Phoenix. Of course, we have competitive objectives as well and we will try to aim for the Top 10. Along with our tech team and mechanics, I believe that an automatic gearbox will allow us to pay more attention to the driving itself. I'm looking forward to seeing how the gearbox can aid us during the Dakar, and I expect great benefits. I'm glad to be able to have David and Tomas by my side during the rally. The fact that this will be our third Dakar already says a lot about our co-operation. We're able to solve problems together and I believe I can rely on them, which is crucial during difficult situations on the Dakar. Ignacio Casale is great and I believe that he has a lot of potential. He has racing in the blood. He told me he feels very comfortable with the Tatra truck, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he and his navigator Alvaro can achieve at Dakar 2021. We spent some time together during testing and I was able to answer his questions and talk a little bit about my Dakar experiences in the truck category, in order to help him out and prepare him as well as possible. Fortunately, even despite the Covid-19 situation, we were able to do some testing. I was especially happy with our final outings before Dakar 2021. They allowed us to get comfortable with the Tatra truck and test it in different terrain conditions”.
