It was just at the finish of the Dakar 2018 that Maurik van den Heuvel insisted he would ‘never’ choose to be part of a big factory supported team. The Dutchman had just finished in ninth overall, finally reaching his goal of a top 10 result. But when he got the chance to be part of Team De Rooy, he took that chance with both hands. Originally the owner of a transport and logistics company with over 100 vehicles had the plan to skip the Dakar for once, as his own Scania was not ready in time. Despite his promise, Van den Heuvel could not resist the invitation of Gerard de Rooy to join his team.
M.v.d.H.: “With a company as busy as mine, it seemed like a wise decision to skip the Dakar for once. I never expected Gerard de Rooy to ask me to join his team, but when he did ask, I couldn’t turn him down. It’s a great chance to see from the inside how a team like this works and what the truck is like. I can learn a lot from this experience. For now it’s just once, but I don’t know what will happen next. What makes it extra special it that we are with three transport companies now -as my new team mates Gerard de Rooy and Ton van Genugten are in logistics as well- and all from the same region. We go a long way back and get along well.”
PETRONAS TEAM DE ROOY IVECO

Team De Rooy's Maurik van den Heuvel and his Iveco shocked everyone by posting the fastest time at CP1. Van den Heuvel beat his leader Gerard de Rooy by 36 seconds and Ton van Genugten by 1'28".
