“The Dakar is like the cherry on the cake”

One of the biggest names in Czech motorsport will be getting a first taste of the Dakar in 2021. Tomas Enge has long been a pioneer for the central European state, and remains the only man from his country to have raced in Formula 1, back in 2001. The 44-year-old has also taken part in events that are part of the sport's unofficial 'Triple Crown', the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, coming as high as 4th in the latter's main LMP1 class in 2009. The son of a touring cars racing driver, Bretislav Enge, Tomas tried his hand at many sports -including ice hockey and ski jumping- before following in his father's footsteps. He has been dubbed the Czech Republic's "milestone man", given his record-breaking achievements across a host of racing disciplines. Now he is preparing for a very new kind of challenge as he tackles the sands of the Dakar in a T4 lightweight vehicle. Though he has limited experience in rally raid, Tomas has been able to rely on the guidance and expertise of his Buggyra Zero Mileage Racing team. He has picked up especially useful advice from five-time quads champion Josef Machacek, whom he describes as a mentor and father figure. Josef completed the Dakar last year in the SSVs alongside Vlastimil Tosenovsky, who will be joining Tomas in his Can-Am Maverick for Dakar 2021. Given his background and skill behind the wheel, it will definitely be worth keeping an eye on one of the most high-profile rookies at this 43rd edition.

T.E.: “Looking over my whole racing career, I feel the Dakar is like the cherry on the cake for me. After all the disciplines I've competed in, all the competitions I've done, all the cars I've driven, I'm really looking forward to my first Dakar. The Dakar is huge, and very popular in the Czech Republic, I've been following it since I was very young. I started to dream about competing in the race one day and experiencing Dakar. I'm looking forward to competing not only once but several times, that would be my objective right now. I've never done offroad racing on sand, in the desert, on such demanding terrain as the Dakar. But I hope I can use my considerable experience from endurance racing, because the Dakar is a two-week rally and a lot of stages require serious stamina. I have to settle into a rhythm, to go to the Dakar without any problems and successfully reach the finish line. Ideally, without any problems! I'm really looking forward to going to the Dakar with my co-driver Vlastimil Tosenovsky.”
