“Every day could see a different winner”

Between them, Gert Huzink and good friend Martin Roesink have well over 30 Dakar entries under their belts, but Huzink thinks this year will be the most unpredictable yet. The absence of Kamaz means a stream of potential stage winners and over ten trucks with a shot at the 2023 podium - including their own, newly upgraded, hybrid-powered Renault.


G.H.: “This year will be different. It's a shame Kamaz is not there, but it should create a very exciting Dakar truck category because every day could see a different winner. Our goal is the top five but there will be nine or ten others that can also achieve that and, with a bit of luck, the podium.
“We’ve improved a lot of things on our truck, including the hybrid engine. The hybrid is a very good solution because we can use less diesel power, giving us longer engine life and range. We’ve also changed the chassis dimensions, the front axle is more to the front which is better for the dunes - last year our ‘nose’ was too long!”
