“I'm here to help Martin and the whole team”

After four Dakar outings in the trucks with Tatra Buggyra Racing, Martin Soltys is preparing for a new challenge in 2022 as he joins the Big Shock Racing team. The 48-year-old has been a solid performer over the past few years, gradually improving from 12th place on his debut to 10th last year. Having already acted as a lieutenant for Martin Kolomy in 2018 and 2019, he will be helping out another namesake in 2022: Big Shock Racing leader Martin Macik, who is hoping to improve on an excellent fourth place at Dakar 2021. Soltys will be getting behind the wheel of ‘Arnie’, a brand-new Iveco Powerstar built in the Macik family’s MM Technology workshops in Sedlcany. Macik and his father Martin Macik Sr founded the Big Shock Racing team in 2016, and have been striving for the chance to send two racing trucks to the Dakar for several years now. Soltys is relishing the prospect of not only helping out Martin Jr, but also trying to make further inroads into the top 10 himself. The Rokycany native will be joined by navigator Roman Krejci, an experienced biker who has competed in the Dakar’s Original by Motul class, and mechanic Jakub Jirinec, with whom Soltys has worked in the past. The trio have had the opportunity to do some testing together, but the real baptism of fire will come once they reach Saudi Arabia, with the goal of making it a successful Dakar all round for the Big Shock Racing team.

M.S.: “The Maciks and I have known each other for many years. We used to race against each other in local offroad competitions, and when I started on the Dakar we became friends. I wanted to make a change after several years in the same team. I didn't get the feeling the previous truck and team were moving forward, so I started speaking to the Macik family. After what I saw at their MM Technology centre, I knew I had made the right decision and I'm looking forward to the upcoming Dakar. Our goal is to compete for the best positions and to cover each other's backs. You know Dakar, anything can happen. Roman has done Dakar in the malle moto category, and he has the experience of both racing and navigating, so I expect the best from him. Jakub is new to the Dakar but he is reliable and trustworthy, and knows everything about the truck. We tested twice before Dakar 2022 on our own, and Martin also did some testing in Arnie in Morocco. I think that's enough for the truck itself. I'm certainly hoping to improve on 10th place. That’s why we're racing, isn’t it? The new crew and I have to settle into the new Iveco Powerstar, but once we do, I believe it will be a great ride. But of course, I'm here to help Martin and the whole team.”
