Interview

“Our aim for this Dakar is to reach the finish line”

Marcus Winkler better known as “Freddy Fast” is an Austrian driver about to take part in his maiden Dakar Rally alongside codriver Alex Toril. Growing up in Salzburg, near the mountains, “Fast” first got in ski competitions. After university, he bought his first race bike and tried supermoto before switching to enduro and trial. Following a long recovery after a knee injury, he shifted to car racing. In the KTM X-Bow Challenge, everyone raced with a funny nickname. That’s when Marcus Winkler became Freddy Fast: “Off course I wasn’t fast in the beginning, and everyone was laughing. But I’ve improved since then and got faster.” He prepared for the Dakar by racing at the Rallye du Maroc and training in Germany as well as in Dubai, focusing on physical and mental conditioning, including specialized eye training. He met Alex during a Porsche GT3 race and as rookies, their main goal is, like everyone else, to reach the finish line, relying on South Racing experience. With his slogan “Keep It Gold”, his intention is to keep his feet on the ground.

MW: “I grew up in Salzburg, in the middle of the mountains. So, I started out with skiing and ski racing. After I finished university, I bought my first bike and got interested in supermoto at a time when it was a bit less professional and therefore easier to get into. I wasn’t very successful in the dirt section, so I switched to enduro and trials. I did the Erzberg Rodeo, Romaniacs… several times before injuring my knee seriously. I couldn’t walk for seven years… After I had recovered, I switched to cars and took part in several races with Porsche. For this Dakar, I took part in the Rallye du Maroc. I met Alex at a Porsche GT3 race. Initially, he wanted to do it with his own car, but we ended up with just one car, which is better than none! He’s a professional driver and races a T4 with his brother. Our aim for this Dakar is to reach the finish line. We’re rookies and with South Racing, we have what we need to get there.”
