Interview

“Not being able to race the Dakar was a disaster”

Just 19 years old in 2021 for his first ever Dakar, Konrad Dabrowski was the youngest ever finisher in the bike class. In 2022 the Duust team rider came 7th in class on the Dakar and was looking good for a final podium in the W2RC Rally2 category until he caught Covid in September… It meant he struggled with his fitness on the Rally du Maroc and again in Andalucia, eventually relinquished his 3rd place in the championship to Bradley Cox. Then, just before the 2023 Dakar, the young Pole, son of ex-bike and car racer Marek, was struck down with appendicitis and had to give the race a miss. Keen to return to the bivouac as soon as possible, Konrad entered the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, but by his own admission came back too early, before finishing 5th at the Sonora Rally and a convincing 2nd in Rally2 at the Ruta 40 in Argentina. Starting off strongly at the Rallye du Maroc in October, Konrad finished Stage 1 in third place behind the eventual Rally2 winner Bradley Cox and W2RC champion Romain Dumontier, before crashing out on Stage 2. Now fit and healthy again, Konrad is looking to kick start his 2024 W2RC campaign with a strong finish in Saudi Arabia in January.

“2023 was an up and down kind of year. Obviously not being able to race the Dakar was a disaster as far as the championship was concerned and it took me longer to get back to fitness than I anticipated. I approached the Sonora Rally like a training session and that went well and then, having changed my fitness programme to build more muscle, I felt really strong on the bike in Argentina and that showed in the results with a top 10 overall. Morocco didn’t work out as planned, with me waking up in hospital, but all the tests I’ve done since seem to show there’s no serious injuries to my shoulder, so the plan now is to go out to Dubai and train there until around mid-December. As far as the Dakar is concerned my goal is to finish in the top 20 overall and top 5 in Rally2 – a Rally2 podium would be a great result. I know I have the speed to do it. It’s ‘just’ a case of putting it all together for the 2 weeks.”
