“Mentally strong thanks to kickboxing!”
There's no messing around with Humphrey Senn Van Basel. A Dutch, European and World champion in kickboxing back in the nineties, the Dutchman will be rather noticeable on the next Dakar bivouacs with his big tattooed arms. This accomplished sportsman only started riding bikes three years ago but the Dakar doesn't really worry him. Born in the Netherlands with Indonesian parents, big Humphrey knows that he's mentally strong and that nothing will stop him. His various experiences all along the season, including a 19th spot at the Desafio Ruta 40 or a 21st place at the Rally Dos Sertoes have shown that he certainly has what it takes to finish the Dakar. And that's his primary goal. At least for this year.
“My first memories of the Dakar are from watching TV. I still have in mind the big dunes of Africa. I was a professional kick boxer before and only started riding bikes three years ago. Since then, it has really become my passion. I know I'm mentally strong thanks to boxing. I never give up. It really only depends on you if you use your head. My only enemy is myself and that's what I like. For this Dakar, my only goal is to finish. In the following years, I'd like to aim at the Top 30. I'm a competitor.”
